William Broad was the oldest son of Professor T. and Mrs. Caroline G. Broad  of Summerland. and the second of their sons to die in the Great War. William was also in law being a member of the law firm of McLean, Patterson & Broad of Calgary. William had a large circle of friends in Summerland having lived his summers in Summerland working on the family orchard on Jones Flat Road. William was killed, at the age of 24, on April 9^th 1917 while serving with the Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) 5^th Battalion He is buried at the EcoivresMilitaryCemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
