James attends the Sedbergh School in England from Mar 1894 to July 1899. 1900 he enters Sandhurst, Royal Military College as a Gentlemen Cadet. Graduates in 1901 as Second Lieutenant, and is appointed to the Indian Staff Corps, 8th May and then is posted to the 1st Bn , 10th Gurkha Rifles. James is promoted to Lieutenant, 8 Aug 1903. 8 May 1910 he is promoted to Captain.
June 1912, James is granted a leave of absence and accompanied his parents on their return trip to Summerland. He spends two month here before returning to his regiment. The 10th Gurkha Rifles fought in several campaigns on the Indian frontiers before fighting in the First World War. James fights and dies in the costly Gallipoli Campaign. 28 Jun 1915
James leads his soldiers in the Battle of Gully Ravine (28 Jun Ravine (28 Jun ––5 Jul). After two days of artillery bombardment, 5 Jul). This will become the northern--most Allied position at most Allied position at Helles. This successful attack achieves their objective but at a high cost. James is killed sometime between the 29 and 30 Jun 1915.1915.
