John Julius ‘Johnny’ Lemke

Lemke, JohnnieJohnny Julius Lemke was born in Ogema Saskatchewan on November 5 1915. He was the son of John and Helen Lemke of Summerland. The town of Ogema is located 115 kilometres south of Regina between Weyburn and Assiniboia. He was the son of John and Helen Lemke. He lived and schooled in Ogema until 1937 when he moved to Summerland. In the spring of 1941 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He received his training at the ‘R’ FlightSchool in Regina Saskchawan.. He was sent overseas in July 1942 as a Flight Sergeant . Summerlanders Bob McCutcheon, ‘Sandy’ Caldwell and Johnny Lemke were long time friends and all three enlisted at the same time. Johnny’s plane was shot down off the coast of Norway in 1943. He was posthumously awarded the Operational Wings of the Royal Canadian Air Force in recognition of gallant service in action against the enemy on June 28th 1946. His brother was Herb Lemke (deceased) and sisters Hilda Eden, Helen Tilbe (deceased) and Gloria Staples from Summerland. Johnny also had sisters Ann Bell from Levack Ontario and brother Ervin Lemke from Burnaby.He is buried at the RunnymedeMemorialCemetery in Surrey United Kingdom (Grave Panel 183) (R/106948)
