His parents were Captain Arthur M. Temple and Enid S. Temple of Summerland. Lived on Walters Road. His father lead the first cavalry charge in World War One. Apparently because the air was so clear CaptainTemple misjudged the distance and in fact was a lot longer than expected.
Jack Temple was born in Summerland on July 23 1923.TheTemple family lived on the Front Bench. With the family orchard in his early years Jack worked in the orchard. He was a Boy Scout and also joined the Sea Cadets in Penticton. Jack was popular and quite athletic. He was active skating, swimming and boating. He constructed home built kayaks and rowboats. He attended Summerland’s elementary and high schools. As with many young men at the time he wanted to join the war and left home early to join the Royal Canadian Air Forces. His enlistment was initially unsuccessful. The enlisting officer was a friend of his father MajorTemple and wouldn’t let him enlist because he was too young. Jack remained in Vancouver and has hired by the Boeing assembly plant in Burnaby. Six days after his 18th birthday he re-enlisted into the R.C.A.F.. He trained as a airframe mechanic and then a pilot.His training took him to first Goderich Ontario (#12 EFTS) and then MonctonNew Brunswick (#8 SFTS). On November 10 1943 Jack won his pilot’s wings. In the spring of 1944 he joined the 425 RCAF Squadron, Alouettes. His first operational tour was February 1 1945. His Halifax bomber crashed in the early morning of March 19 1945, seven weeks before the end of the war in Europe. Jack’s plane was returning from a bombing raid on Whitten Germany. At a height of 2800 feet an already damaged Mosquito bomber, flying above Jack’s plane crashed into his plane. The Halifax rotated upside down and the rear gunner was thrown out of the plane in the crash and survived but all others were killed. The crash occurred near Laroche Belgium. Jack Temple was buried in the Hotten British Military Cemetery in Belgium.(J/95510)
