Frederick Russell Walker was born November 10 1887 in RedfordEngland. He enlisted on April 6 1915. A letter home in the spring of 1917 read, “Will you please thank the Summerland Home Comfort Club for the Christmas parcel they sent me. It was very welcome and I am afraid I made short work of the eatables. The shirt was much appreciated as it is very hard to keep clean out here, and the authorities certainly do not help you. As far as I know there has been only one casualty from Summerland in the 11th C.M.R. draft and that was Dick Heron, who I understand was killed when coming out of a dugout by a shell. He was with the 29th Battalion. Marson and Nelson are well with the 7th and so far we have all been quite lucky. That reminds me, I saw Billy Haddrell who is flourishing and Bill Angove, who said “Punch” Elliott was around the district and in good health.”. Fred Walker died shortly after the letter was written on April 28th 1917 while serving with the Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment) 7th Battalion. He is buried at the OrchardDumpCemetery in Pas de Calais, France (Grave V.E.20). The Orchard Dump Cemetery is in the village of Arleux-en-Gohelle, on the main road (D919) from Arras to Henin-Lietard. The cemetery lies on the left side of this road approximately 1 km from the village of Bailleul-Sire-Berthoult. (R#116322)
