Harold David ‘Harry’ Barkwill

Harry Daniel Barkwill was born in Hazelmire England on February 8th 1890. He came to Summerland with his brothers George and Bob in 1910. His trade was as a teamster. He worked primarily at the lumber mill at the west end of Garnett Valley. Harry and George had their military training at the same station in England. Harry arrived in England on October 31 1916. It just so happened that the training facility was close to where their parents lived (Hazelmire was near by). Bramshot was one of the main training facilities for the Canadian Army in World War One.Harry was trained at Bramshot in January 1917. Private Barkwill initially enlisted on the Royal Mounted Rifles. In February 1917, Private Barkwill joined the Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment) 47th Battalion and left for France. Harry was killed in action on August 26 1917    His name is on the Vimy Memorial in Pas de Calais France(R#687274)
