Banners of Remembrance
Summerland, BC, Canada
A banner for each of the service personnel listed on the Cenotaph in Memorial Park, Summerland, British Columbia. There are 39 names from World War I and 25 names from World War II. If a picture is unavailable, a silhouette is used. The first four were funded by the Summerland Cultural Committee. The family of George Barkwill paid for his. Since then, Summerland Legion and Summerland and District Credit Union have been generous. We are grateful to the District of Summerland for hanging the banners every year during the Remembrance period.
Throughout this site we may refer to soldiers or service men. This is for brevity. In WWI there was a woman in the group, Millicent DeThoren (a nurse) and of course airmen and sailors. Names that are bracketed in quotes are nick names, that carried much more importance than they do now, especially in the First World War.
The picture at the top of this site is of the cenotaph in front of the old high school. The cenotaph was moved to Memorial Park in downtown Summerland.
